Many boarding schools provide extra curricular activities after school hours to further progress the pupils’ education and social skills. This can often mean the children participate in more physical and social activity than those attending day school. In this article we look at the various types of after school activity and entertainment a child attending boarding school may enjoy.
Extra curricular activities at boarding schools may take many forms and are often provided on set days after the school day has ended. The level of interest and seasonality means that these activities change throughout the school year, allowing children to sample a wide variety of sports, hobbies, and pastimes. Each child is supervised and encouraged by staff to help them achieve their best in each activity.
Many boarding school activities will involve sports and physical education, an important part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle for any child. This may include self defence, archery, football, bowling, cricket, and many other sports both indoors and outdoors. Team sports are thought by many to be important in developing social skills, communication, mutual respect, balance and coordination, as well as the many physical benefits associated with exercise. Many boarders will have the chance to leave the school on organised Saturday and weekend trips for activities which cannot be tried on school grounds, such as orienteering, fencing and fishing. Boarding schools close to the coast will often arrange for children to have the opportunity to try other water based activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and sailing.
Other less strenuous activities will also be provided for all children to enjoy. This may include speech and drama, cookery, woodwork, orchestra, art and debate. Not all children will feel able to, or wish to participate in all the sports available at their boarding school, and these less physically demanding pastimes and experiences can open doors to new skills and accomplishments. Children indicating an interest or particular flair for any activity they try will be actively encouraged by staff to continue and improve, gaining the most fun and achievement from their participation.
